Day 316 of 365

I don't know why I didn't run.

This day started with a drive to the Royal Gorge in Colorado. The goal, to experience my first Segway course.

Things didn't go quite as planned.

I flew out to Colorado a few weeks ago and didn't rent a car. I've been at the mercy of the drivers I'm staying with and instead of taking me to the Segway course they delivered me to a heart pounding adventure.

On my 316th day I had my first and only ever HELL-icopter ride.

I should explain that driving down winding roads makes me nauseous. I get motion sick and that's why there haven't been a lot of 365 day experiences that mess with my equilibrium. If I'm being 100% honest, a helicopter ride was part of my pre 365 day list. I wanted to do this so much but getting sick for the cause didn't have any appeal.

The ride launched from Royal Gorge Heli Tours. I climbed the stairs to the office and the pilot asked if I wanted to take a tour. I laughed and said no! My sister said yes and the decision to ride was made. I watched a safety video. I put on my flotation vest. My heart was beating so fast that I thought fear would win.

It did not!

My sister and I climbed in that helicopter and she was generous (or smart) enough to give me a front seat view. For the first few minutes I was excited and amazed and if you've ever been to the Royal Gorge bridge this is a great way to feel like a bird above one of nature's heart-stopping creations.

Helicopters are funny things. When the horizon was where my body knew it should be, I loved the ride. As soon as the whirly machine took a turn and I felt like I was flying sideways, the vomit monster started to appear.

If you've been followoing you'll rememeber that I got motion sick playing a VR game on day 98. Reality is so much worse. For safety reasons the protocol for exiting the helicopter is very specific. As we touched down to the landing pad I didn't care a single bit about it. I wanted out!

I don't remember much of the next few hours. My family took me to get a ginger drink in hopes it would settle my nausea.

Hell-icopter rides are a NO go for me. I'll stick to long airplane rides with tummy settling dramamine.

Day 316 was quite a ride.
