Yesterday

I'm not a history buff and most of the things I've learned in school only make a difference on Tuesday trivia nights.

On day 304 I took a tour of the history of Cripple Creek at their District museum.

This place where the past comes to life is running a scavenger hunt for the summer.

What's the prize?

A real nugget of gold.

The quest: to make your way through this amazing museum and answer questions about the history of the area.

Whoever started this campaign is a genius because I walked through at a snails pace and enjoyed every minute of it. The costumes and artifacts made me hungry for simpler times.

I am intrigued by mining and gold panning and the second floor fed my curiosity with samples of mining discoveries. Gold isn't the only thing they search for but who wouldn't want to discover a giant chunk of gold.

Market price today? $1223.00 per ounce

It might be worth a few hours in the river with an old pie plate. I may or may not have done that.

My ticket to the museum included time in the giant trough panning for gemstones. I would still be there now if I didn't have to run off. You don't have to be 10 to disappear in the huge container of ore left over from the mines.

As first experiences go this left me wanting more. I should go back and explore the two buildings that I didn't have time to enter.

Day 304 was a real gem.
