Day 293 of 365
In the last week I've had quite a few experiences with baseball. It's supposed to be America's pastime. I think social media has taken over that particular category.
Since I'm not a huge fan of watching this game, I have taken on today's experience with hesitation.
On day 293 I assisted as an umpire in a machine pitch softball game.
As a young girl I lived for this sport but I have never played the catcher position and until today I have never umpired a game.
I don't know why anyone would. It's no fun at all and everyone around can call the game better than you. My personal experience with the coaches was okay. I'm sure they knew it was my first time. I'd like to say it went well but I really can't judge. I didn't have to do much but count pitches, outs and innings.
This is a thankless job and as easy as machine pitch plays I wouldn't want to umpire a game that has more action and criticism. Maybe every coach should be required to umpire just to see how difficult it is.
