Day 139 of 365

Snakes on the snow

It's fair to say that I had a slightly different adventure planned for today but after my morning with mom and driving home in the snow I decided to do something a little fun that required zero driving.

In a perfect world this experience was spectacular.

On day 139 I wanted to turn sugar into a snake.

You might have played with those charcoal looking snakes on the 4th of July. When I was a child it was a pretty exciting "firework" right before we lit the sparklers.

I never knew the chemical reason why those little black snakes grew from the tiny pellet but I loved them. I would stack them together to try to get the biggest one I could.

So that's what made my adventure for the day so very exciting. I was finally getting the chance to grow a giant charcoal snake.

It's so easy to make that I had to hit myself for not doing this at a younger age. I mixed 1 part baking soda to 4 parts powdered sugar. I filled a pan with sand and soaked that with some vodka. I needed an alcohol accelerant but that didn't work out well so I used lighter fluid instead. Once the sand was saturated I made a little hole in it and poured my sugar/soda combo in. I lit that sucker on fire and after a minute I got my snake. It took a bit of time to grow. It's not as dramatic as I thought it would be but when it was done I had fulfilled that childhood dream.

Day 139 was a reality that might have been better as a dream.
