Day 13 of 365

Day 13 and some Pickleball

I knew when I started this365 day adventure that some of my days were going to include fitness activities. Since I work part time at a fitness center I knew there would be opportunities for me to try some things that might make me stronger, more flexible and maybe even remind me how athletic I was before all the injuries to my body.

So day 13, lucky 13, was all about pickle ball. If you aren't familiar with the sport, oh yes it is a sport. The game is played very much like tennis except you use a flat solid paddle about twice the size of a ping pong paddle. The ball is hard plastic with holes in it. It bounces on the hard surface like a tennis ball and I was pretty surprised at how well it responded when I smashed it over the net.

I was feeling pretty hesitant because most of the people I played with today are regular members who I greet most days when I'm working. I've never had an opportunity to experience sportsmanship with them because most of our conversations focus on friendly greetings and maybe an issue with their membership. I have to admit that the group that plays at the fitness center is a hoot! They welcomed me with open arms, and with extreme patience, taught me the ins and outs of the game.

After a quick run-through on rules, scoring and how to serve we were right at it. They let me get a feel for how the racquet played against the ball and we were on. I know the first group took it very easy on me because he kept saying I was doing okay. I could tell one of the players wanted to unleash his Pickleball beast but he was patient enough to let me get the hang of it.

I lost the first game, in fact I lost every game I played and felt bad for my partners. While I was beginning to catch on I remembered my childhood dreams of tennis and playing the game like Chris Evert. I wanted to be her and I did my best to bring that desire to the pickle ball court.

Epic fail! Chris would be so disappointed.

I will say that I had a few good shots and even though I'm not playing sports the way I have in the past I did enjoy the game. In fact I had so much fun that I decided to go back next monday and play again. Maybe I should see how I feel tomorrow? I might have a different attitude once my muscles remind me that I don't play pickle ball on a regular basis.

Day 13 was exciting and a reminder to just keep moving.

Love & Light

I planted the #365rockdays rock in the wee hours of the morning.
